French Tambour Beading
Tambour beading sets beads through a stretched ground using a fine hook rather than a needle. It is slower than needle beading but produces a flatter, more even surface and lets us turn tight curves without gaps — which is why couture houses still use it for evening pieces.

How it is worked
The ground is stretched drum-tight on a frame. The embroiderer guides beads from underneath with one hand while the hook pulls a chain of thread through with the other, so beads sit in a continuous line rather than individually knotted.
- Beads — glass seed beads, bugle beads, pearls and sequins in matt, satin or metallic finishes.
- Backing — the beaded panel is mounted onto a stabilised canvas or leather core so the weight does not distort the bag.

How to Order & Sample
- Bead chart: size, finish and colour of each bead type, plus where matt and metallic beads meet.
- Hardware: clasp type, plating and whether it should be die-cast to your own profile.
- Weight target — dense beadwork adds grams, and a heavy panel changes how the clutch hangs.
Quick Answers: MOQ, Sampling & Lead Times
Short, self-contained answers to the questions buyers ask most about this programme.
- What is tambour beading?
- Tambour beading sets beads through a stretched ground using a fine hook rather than a needle. The embroiderer guides beads from underneath while the hook pulls a chain of thread through, so beads sit in a continuous line. It is slower than needle beading but produces a flatter, more even surface and turns tight curves without gaps.
- How many pieces of tambour beading can be produced?
- With twelve embroiderers assigned to one style we have run 500 pieces to a fixed showroom deadline, at roughly eight hours of handwork per unit. Beyond that volume we would add a second shift or extend the calendar rather than compromise stitch density.
- Is tambour beading suitable for a lower-priced line?
- Sparingly. Scatter a small beaded motif at the clasp or panel corner instead of covering the whole face: you keep the couture signal without paying for hours of dense beadwork. Many brands use beads only on the closure and keep the body clean.
- Does beadwork add significant weight?
- Yes, and it changes how the piece hangs. Dense beadwork across an entire face adds measurable grams and can make a clutch feel bottom-heavy, so we counterweight or reduce coverage on large panels. Always state a weight target when the brief is written.
