Suzani Embroidery on Canvas

Suzani is a Central Asian embroidery tradition built from large round medallions and scrolling vines. We work it in dense chain stitch on 16–18oz cotton canvas using naturally dyed madder, indigo and ochre threads, so the surface stays soft while the motif holds its shape.

How the motif is built

A Suzani panel is not printed or appliquéd — every line is stitched. That changes what is possible: we can set a different thread weight on the outline than on the fill, and shift from matte to lustrous thread inside one medallion.

  • Stitch — chain stitch (tambour) for outlines, satin and stem stitch for fills and vines.
  • Thread — naturally dyed cotton or silk floss; madder for red, indigo for blue, pomegranate and walnut for browns.
  • Ground — 16–18oz combed cotton canvas or cotton-linen, pre-shrunk before embroidery.

How to Order & Sample

  • Motif artwork in vector form, plus the panel size and placement on the bag.
  • Colour direction — send Pantone TCX/TPX for the palette; botanical dye shades are matched by lab dip.
  • Density preference: bold folk coverage or a lighter scattered motif, since stitch count drives both look and unit cost.

Quick Answers: MOQ, Sampling & Lead Times

Short, self-contained answers to the questions buyers ask most about this programme.

What is Suzani embroidery?
Suzani is a Central Asian embroidery tradition built from large round floral medallions and scrolling vines, worked by hand in dense chain stitch. Historically made for dowry textiles, it is now applied to canvas bags using naturally dyed madder, indigo and ochre threads.
Can a Suzani motif be matched exactly?
Yes for the motif, no for the thread colour. We redraw the pattern as vector artwork and digitise it, so the shapes and stitch directions match. Colours are matched by lab dip because botanical dyes vary naturally between vats; we document the recipe so reorders stay consistent.
How dense can Suzani embroidery be?
Full-panel coverage is possible, but past a certain density the canvas stiffens and the bag loses drape. We usually recommend capping coverage around 70 percent and compensating with a slightly heavier canvas, which keeps the motif bold without turning the panel rigid.
How does stitch count affect the price?
It is the single biggest cost variable on an embroidered style, because it drives both machine time and hand-finishing hours. A small scattered monogram can cost a fraction of a full Suzani field, so it is the first thing to adjust when hitting a target price.

Production & Customization FAQ

Can you match an existing Suzani motif?

Yes. Send a photo or the original textile and we re-draw it as vector artwork, then digitise it. We can keep the original stitch direction or re-engineer it for a smaller panel.
